RCMP, intelligence agency accused of spying on environmental groups

Environmental groups in BC say that police and special intelligence have spied on them, because they oppose the Northern Gateway pipeline.

The BC Civil Liberties Association has filed two complaints with the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service, saying it was unconstitutional and potentially illegal.

Access to Information requests found the National Energy Board directed both groups to monitor and report threats to the project by groups opposing the pipeline.

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver said in a statement neither he “nor any member of his department gave instructions to any federal agency in this matter.”

ForestEthics, one of the groups allegedly targeted, called it “outrageous”.
