The man shot outside the Boomtown Casino on April 1 has died in hospital and now police are investigating his death as a homicide.

Ahmed Khalif Mahamoud, 24, of Fort McMurray was shot at 12:40 a.m. April 1 and was treated on scene before being sent to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre and on to hospital in Edmonton where he passed away Wednesday.

Witnesses said April 1 they had seen someone running from the scene on Hardin Street toward Franklin Avenue. Officers had asked businesses along Franklin Avenue if their security footage had captured the flight of the potential suspect on April 1.

The Wood Buffalo RCMP General Investigation Section and Serious Crime Unit are working with investigators from the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit from Edmonton as they search for information about exactly what happened the night Mahamoud was shot.

The incident is not believed to have been random and police had said at the time there was no danger to the public because they believed the shooting was targetted.

If you have information about this, or any other investigation, please call the Wood Buffalo RCMP at (780) 788-4000. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1.800.222.8477 (TIPS).
