Record year for Fort McMurray International Airport

The Fort McMurray International Airport is the fastest growing airport in Canada with an annual growth rate of 9.5 per cent in 2014.

“These record-breaking numbers demonstrate just how essential the opening of our new terminal building was to support our dynamic community. We are proud to see traffic through the Fort McMurray International Airport continue to expand at a rapid pace, and are pleased to be able to meet the air transportation needs of this vibrant region,” said Scott Clements, President and CEO of the Fort McMurray Airport Authority.

Fort McMurray International handled 1,308,416 commercial and charter passengers both in and out of the airport in 2014. That’s an increase from the 1,195,437 who travelled in 2013.

The busiest month of 2014 was July, when 117,354 people used the airport.

Fort McMurray International Airport’s growth means that it has surpassed the Regional International Airport to become Canada’s fifteenth busiest.

The airport also expanded its air service in 2014 with new direct flights to Kelowna and Vancouver courtesy of Westjet, while Air Canada increased its direct flights to Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver. Sunwing launched a new seasonal service to Cancun, Mexico during the winter months.
