Premier Alison Redford made a major budgeting announcement after her speech in Fort McMurray on Thursday night.

Redford says that departments will be asked to re-build their budgets from a zero base, rather than just building on the money they already have.

“They have to examine all of the programs in their department, they have to ensure that their programs that we believe, as government, Albertans want. It’ll be health care, it’ll be education, social services, parks and tourism.

Every three years, we’re going back as government and saying, ‘Are we spending money effectively?’”

She says this will happen over a three year period, with one-third of government departments each year needing to propose the “zero base” budget plan.
