Region's unemployment rate shrinks slightly in July

The region’s unemployment rate edged down slightly in July. Eight per cent of people in the oilsands region of Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake were unemployed, that’s down from 8.2 per cent in July according to Statistics Canada numbers released Friday.

That’s still higher than the national average of 6.9 per cent and higher than both Calgary (6.8 per cent) and Edmonton (5.9 per cent) in fact, the unemployment rate in Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake is the highest of the surveyed economic regions in Alberta.

The rating shot as high as 8.6 per cent in May which was the highest since March of 2001.

Alberta’s unemployment rate rose by 0.2 per cent to 6.1 per cent in July.
