In a move to ease congestion, the hours of operation and passenger requirements for theConfederation Waybus lane have changed, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

The commencement time of the bus-only lane has been pushed back 30 minutes to5:30 a.m.continuing until8 a.m., seven days a week.  The changes take effect on Thursday, November 17, and will allow non-transit vehicles increased access to the lane.

Transit vehicles designed to carry more than 15 passengers may now use the bus lane as well. A bylaw amendment will be put forth to lower the figure from 15 to nine passengers at the Council meeting on December 13.

“By encouraging bus ridership, we’re creating viable transportation choices for residents,” said Public Infrastructure Divisional Manager Wes Holodniuk. “We’re meeting with industry on a regular basis and will make adjustments as necessary to encourage the use of transit.”

“The municipality has worked very effectively gathering input and assessing all possible options for alleviating traffic congestion,” said Raymond Floyd, Suncor Senior Vice President. “Adoption of the new bus lane has made transit much faster, more reliable and more attractive. Change is difficult, but I applaud Mayor and Council for taking this important step to improve our region.”

Motorists are advised that strict enforcement of the bus lane will continue.
