Councillor Keith McGrath wants to clean up the mess that is on-street parking in Fort McMurray. His motion to have administration review all on-street parking bylaws was passed unanimously by Council.

Administration will review all municipal bylaws, policies and standards dealing with residential on-street parking for the purpose of developing a parking plan to help address safety concerns.

“I was walking the dog with a neighbour and the dog died simply because there was so many cars parked on top of the sidewalk the sightlines weren’t there. The dog went out and the dog got killed,” said McGrath. “I guess I’m just grateful that it wasn’t a kid because I know it’s going to happen.”

Administration will report back to Council on or before Nov. 1.

He says that with vehicles parked on both sides of the street some roads aren’t passable in the winter if there’s oncoming traffic.

The Municipality will look at intersection setbacks, pedestrian crosswalks, parking bans, or restrictions.
