The provincial government is warning about fraudulent websites preying on unemployed oil industry workers.

A downturn in oil prices means greater competition for work in the province and scammers are targeting job-seekers in Canada and beyond.

Daglo Oil & Gas Co., a fictitious business has set up a website and has been posing as an employer with jobs in the oilsands.

The company offers jobs but that before you can begin you need to transfer them a sum of money, usually demanded for work visas, travel expenses or other pre-screening costs.

After the money is paid, the job seeker finds out there isn’t a job and that the company is fake.

Most of the information on the Daglo Oil & Gas Co., website has been copied from Connacher Oil & Gas Ltd’s including information on the Great Divide Oilsands, Pod One SAGD project, and Connacher’s management team.

The government says some warning signs for scams like these would be a sense of urgency from the fake employer to complete the transaction, and job offers without interviews.

Employment agencies recruiting for positions in Alberta must be licensed and are prohibited from charging recruitment fees.

Calls placed to the phone number listed on the website went straight to voicemail.
