Scientists claim oil sands pollution travelling up to 100km

Suncor, oilsands project

Federal scientists say they’ve found contaminants from the oil sands in remote lakes up to 100 kilometres away.

One senior environment canada scientist says that shows oilsands pollution has been travelling further than expected for decades.

The findings are being reported to an international toxicology conference in the U.S.

Another scientist will report that snow is being contaminated up to 50 kilometres away from sites, with chemicals that are toxic to fish.

The research was done as part of the Joint Canada-Alberta Implementation Plan for Oilsands Monitoring.
