Select Wood Buffalo RCMP officers now wearing video cameras

The next time you run into the RCMP on the streets it might be recorded on video. The Wood Buffalo RCMP is part of a pilot project that will see 12 officers wear video cameras. Wood Buffalo is just one of three detachments that are taking part in the national feasibility study.

“The body worn camera project won’t impact day-to-day operations in Wood Buffalo,” said Sgt. Keith Horwood, who is managing the local test project. “However it is important for local citizens to realize that if you come into contact with an RCMP officer over the next four months, the possibility exists that the interaction will be filmed.”

Officers began wearing the cameras on Jun. 27. Mounties in Indian Head and Windsor, Nova Scotia are also taking part in the program. Police already have cameras inside their vehicles. “When we have any interactions outside of our vehicle the video camera footage is going to be able to capture that interaction,” said Cst. Ashley Quallie.

Protocols recommended by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada have been put in place to help guide police when it comes to the proper storage and documentation of the footage.
