UPDATED: Shell cutting less than 10% of oilsands workforce

Shell Canada is cutting jobs in the oilsands, and most of those positions are with salaried employees.

A company spokesperson told the Canadian Press it will affect less than 10 per cent of its 3,000 person workforce at the Jackpine and Muskeg River mines.

The company says the move ensures Shell’s oilsands business remains competitive and continues to thrive. It also told CP that some employees will be considered for jobs at other Shell operations. A request for comment has been made to Shell.

RMWB Mayor Melissa Blake commented on the job losses at a separate announcement today, “When we are facing the kind of economic climate that we do have, it’s not unanticipated that we might find some decline in the number of employees that plants are keeping on. I’m certainly hopeful that people who are here are permanent residents are not the ones that are necessarily affected. We recognize the risk that comes from being a transient work force and the ability to shed off some of those positions and its very unfortunate when it happens.”
