The Municipality is working on restoring the outdoor recreation infrastructure residents rely on.

The facilities that are listed as open have been cleaned and inspected to meet CSA (formerly Canadian Standards Association) standards. It is typical practice to ensure all parks and playgrounds have met the safe requirements.

Any outdoor recreation that is deemed unsafe or located in a restricted area will remain closed the public and surrounded by fencing until further notice.

As part of the recovery process, a wildfire hazard assessment has been completed in unburned areas on municipal and provincial lands. The Municipality is doing FireSmart and vegetation management in a number of areas.

FireSmart is a national program aimed at reducing the threat of wildfire to communities and property. One element of FireSmart is fuels removal and reduction, which is ongoing and will continue for several months throughout the municipality.

Several areas are undergoing tree removal for safety purposes in areas identified by FireSmart as potential wildfire hazards. The Birchwood Trails are expected to be closed until further notice.

Crews have blocked access to the perimeter trails from the neighbourhood connectors. Residents are advised to observe all barricades and temporary signage. To ensure your safety, residents are asked to avoid areas where work is ongoing.

Residents are strongly encouraged to dispose of yard debris using the paper yard waste bag. The following items can be included in the paper yard waste bag:

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Flowers
  • Weeds
  • Culled plants
  • Small twigs less than 30 centimetres (12 inches) long

Do not put kitchen food scraps, pet waste or non-organic garden waste such as broken plant pots in the bag.

Each household is limited to four bags of yard waste per week. Anything in excess of 4 bags can be brought to the public drop off area and the Fort McMurray Regional Landfill during regular operating hours, free of charge.
