Stronger at the Broken Places opens at MacDonald Island

A new exhibit at MacDonald Island called Stronger at the Broken Places will officially open to the public Thursday night with a celebration starting at 7 p.m.

Local artists Sharon Heading and Carmen Wells took old works they had previously discarded and re-worked them to create something unique they say they’re immensely proud to show to the public.

Heading said when they were both younger artists they really did struggle to get to the point where they produced something that really reflected what they wanted their work to be.

“We started something and then it was like, ‘no this is wrong, this is broken this isn’t what we wanted,’ and we would leave it. And then I had come to a realization that this year I wasn’t going to start something new I was either going to paint over or re-do all of the work that was in my studio,” she said.

Through that creative process she came to have the body of work, 17 pieces, that will be presented at the exhibition. It is her largest exhibition to date.

“I’m really excited to see people’s reactions to it because it is very different,” she said.

“We are delighted to welcome this exciting duo exhibition to the MacDonald Island Community Art Gallery presented by Kirschner Family Corporation this fall,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo. “It is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to showcase the work of talented artists in our community.”

Light refreshments will be served at the official opening on October 8. The exhibition is presented by Kirschner Family Corporation and will be on display at MacDonald Island until November 6.
