Suncor restarts oilsands operations

Start-up activities have begun at Suncor’s Base Plant and the MacKay River facility.

The Calgary-based company announced the restart of its operations within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo Sunday. It even saw initial production from Firebag early last week.

Over 4,000 employees and contractors have been brought back to the region including workers for Fort Hills. Suncor expects to bring in an additional 3,500 workers this week to support its return to operations.

Lodges for employees and contractors were approved for occupation by Alberta Health Services on May. 27, and third-party pipeline and power infrastructure critical to start-up have been restored.

“Construction activities at Suncor’s Fort Hills mine have continued to ramp up and it is expected that the Fort Hills workforce will return to its full complement this week,” stated the company in its press release.

Syncrude is in the process of planning its return to operations.

There was no damage to Suncor assets.
