Superior Court releases more info about Fort McMurray arrest in connection with Toronto murder

An Ontario Superior Court has released more information about a man arrested in Fort McMurray in late May, who’s facing a first degree murder charge of a Toronto man.

The judge granted an application for a number of media sources to publicly release search warrant details for 23-year-old Hanad Mohamed.

He was charged with first degree murder of Anthony Smith; the man who appeared in a viral photo with his arm around Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

According to The Globe and Mail, Mohamed was arrested at his sister’s home by Wood Buffalo RCMP, wearing a t-shirt, sweat pants and sneakers.

Five days later, police conducted a search warrant of her home, which turned up an iPhone police believed would tie him to the murder, as well as three other cells, an SD card, and just over a gram and a half of marijuana.

An anonymous tip April 4th allowed police to access Mohamed’s phone records.

They placed him near the scene of the murder before it happened and also showed him contact Nasir Hashimi 23 times before the murder.

Hashimi pled guilty to manslaughter in the murder of Smith.

The police affidavit also links some of the people involved in the murder to those in a violent street gang.
