UPDATE 8:00AM

Taxi driver protest fleet not going to Syncrude base mine; u-turned at TaigaNova lights.

BACKGROUND:

A fleet of cab drivers are slowly driving down 63 from the airport to Syncrude’s base mine to protest the new vehicle-for-hire bylaw that went into effect on the 1st.

RCMP say they’re following the fleet to monitor the situation, and told us they will give us their action plan as soon as they have one.

Cab companies are stressing this is a driver-run protest, and the companies themselves aren’t involved; dispatchers are still answering the phones.

We have been told the Wood Buffalo Co-op cab company has 5 drivers on the road not protesting.

The by-law includes things like increased licensing fees and a newly appointed Chief Taxi Inspector.

This information is unfolding and we’ll update you with info when we have it.
