TFWs could be barred from Fort McMurray restaurants & hotels under new rules

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says it might become next to impossible to hire temporary foreign workers at restaurants, hotels, and other businesses in Fort McMurray under new rules announced today.

The new rules will make it illegal to hire TFWs for low-skill jobs in areas where the unemployment rate is above six percent.

CFIB president Dan Kelly noted on Twitter that Fort McMurray is part of the “Northern Alberta” region for employment insurance purposes, meaning the area’s overall unemployment rate of more than eight percent might be applied here.

Because of the low unemployment rate, high staff turnover, and high cost of living in Fort McMurray itself, large numbers of food service jobs are filled by TFWs who are often housed by their employers.
