Don’t count Oil Barons head coach Gord Thibodeau as a supporter of new rules passed by the AJHL at last weekend’s Annual General Meeting.

The league has reduced the number of 20-year old players that can be dressed in a game from 9 to 6.

“I wasn’t pleased with it,” Thibodeau said. “I understand the arguments of parity within the league, but it gets a little bit ridiculous. The onus shouldn’t be on taking away the strengths of your strong teams, it should be on the weaker teams getting better.”

Only British Columbia has a similar limit on the number of 20 year olds. The Saskatchewan league is also reducing the limit, but gradually, by 1 per season.

That said, Thibodeau doesn’t expect the rule will be a major obstacle to future success.

“We’re going to be on top regardless of what the rules are,” he said. “If they ask us to play with one leg tied behind our back we’ll still be the best team in the league.”
