Thickwood dog park closed after possible virus outbreak

The Off-Leash Dog Park in Thickwood will be closed until further notice after a suspected case of canine parvovirus.

The dog that is thought to be infected is in veterinary care and was last at the park on Tuesday night.

Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that is transmitted through an animal’s feces which can lead to wide-spread contamination.

It can be carried on human clothing, shoes, and any other object that may have come into contact with the contaminated feces and can live for several months.

The virus attacks the gastrointestinal tract of the animal and can be fatal.

Symptoms include decreased appetite, decreased energy, nausea which is marked by hyper-salivation, vomiting and diarrhea usually with traces of blood.

It could take up to 21 days for your dog to show any symptoms. If you feel like your dog may have been exposed you should watch it closely, if it starts showing signs of illness contact your veterinarian immediately.

The RMWB will provide updates as they become available.
