Tom Morimoto speaking in Fort McMurray

A man who is believed to be the only Japanese-Canadian soldier to take part in D-Day invasions, is speaking in Fort McMurray.

Tom Morimoto will be at Heritage Park to talk about his life in the army and in northern Alberta.

As a teenager, Morimoto worked as a fur trader and radio operator where he grew up in Fort McMurray. He learned Morse code and later served for the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals.

After the war, he became a chemical engineer and worked as far as Dubai. In 2012, Morimoto was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal.

The 97-year-old will be speaking tonight at 7 p.m. at Heritage Park. Copies of his memoir Breaking TrailFrom Canada’s Northern Frontier to the Oil Fields of Dubai will be available at the event.
