U of A finishes study on protecting birds in the oilsands

A three-year report is done and finds oilsands companies need better methods when it comes to keeping birds off tailings ponds.

The University of Alberta’s ‘Research on Avian Protection Project’ was funded partly by fines from Syncrude in 2008 when 1,600 birds died on a tailings pond.

The court’s giving Syncrude three months to look over the recommendations and a month to submit an updated protection plan to the regulator.

One of the reports previously released and apart of this study showed less than a percent of birds that land on the ponds actually die.
