Union fighting legal battle over random drug tests

Suncor, oilsands project

The union that represents more than three thousand workers at Suncor is moving ahead with a legal battle against the company’s random drug testing plans.

The Communications, Energy, and Paperworkers union is looking either for an arbitration process or to get an injunction to stop the program from starting in just over a month.

The local that represents Suncor workers is also looking to join a Supreme Court case that could soon rule whether random testing is constitutional.

The union says it doesn’t oppose addressing drugs in the workplace, but random testing is a degrading way to do it that violates workers’ privacy.
