United Way campaign totals $8.18 million

United Way is getting ready to hand out funding to member agencies after counting the numbers for its 2014 Community Campaign. Today, the organization announced the final total of $8.18 million.

“Over-shooting our target by almost $200,000 is particularly inspiring in light of the falling oil price that began in September. The generosity of Wood Buffalo has shone through once again,” says Campaign Chair Andy Carter in a a news release.

Last year, the United Way also toppled its goal by raising $7.886 million. The Board of Directors credits member agencies for making sure the message is being heard about how important their services are in Wood Buffalo.

“These funds will sustain programs and organizations that are always important, but especially so as we experience a slowdown in the local economy driven by lower oil prices,” stated Executive Director Diane Shannon.

The United Way is figuring out how it will allocate the money to groups under its umbrella. Recommendations will be presented to the Board of Directors in March, and the 2015 funding cycle starts in April.
