Wildrose asking for cut in MLAs' salaries

The Wildrose Party says that they want to see MLAs take a cut in pay. In a letter sent to Justice John Major, who is now reviewing MLA compensation in the province, is asking that MLAs now pay taxes on all of their pay. They want the government roll back the 34 percent salary increases for the premier and cabinet that were voted for back in 2008.

Wildrose leader Danielle Smith says that the party thinks that by cutting back MLA paycheques, it will be fairer for taxpayers.

They’re also asking that a committee which represents Alberta’s population review the MLAs’ pay and benefits once every 8 years.

Finance Critic Rob Anderson said politicians can’t be trusted to set their own pay.

The Wildrose also wants the province to index MLA and cabinet salaries to the rate of inflation. Right now it’s with the weekly wage index, which is generally double or triple the inflation rate.
