A Fort McMurray politician could be the next leader of the Alberta’s Official Opposition. Today, the Wildrose Party opened voting to members who want to pick one of three candidates.

Brian Jean spent 10 years as a Conservative MP for Fort McMurray-Athabasca before resigning last January. He’s up against MLA Drew Barnes and former Strathcona County Mayor Linda Osinchuk.

The party put the leadership race on the fast-track because it expects the Conservatives to call a spring election. Members have 12 days to vote through a phone ballot. The winner will be announced during an event in Calgary on March 28.

Jean has yet to announce which constituency he’s running in.
