The Wildrose party is voicing their dissatisfaction with the TransAlta Corporation.

On Monday, the Alberta Utilities Commission said in a ruling that the company had intentionally planned power outages to drive up electricity prices.

It’s been found guilty of manipulating the electricity market by shutting down plants. The AUC says Trans Alta drove up electricity prices in 2010 and 2011 by timing outages at peak times.

Today in a news release, the Wildrose party responds to the news. Shadow Minister for Electricity and Renewables Don MacIntyre is calling for stronger oversight of Alberta’s electricity grid.

“Wildrose has been sounding the alarm about consumers being gouged by a broken electricity system for years now,'” MacIntyre said. “Albertans have been paying some of the highest power prices in North America and need greater protection. The government should’ve realized something was wrong and acted immediately to fix a broken system. Consumers need to be more strongly protected from future threats of market manipulation.”
