Wood Buffalo Habitat for Humanity plans to build 4th home in region

Wood Buffalo Habitat for Humanity broke ground in Waterways today to build its fourth home in the region.

Vice chair Crystal Lewis-Winton says the organization wants to build a home a year, but finding affordable land is an issue.

“We were lucky that this lot we got through a tax sale at the municipality, our previouis two lots we got for a two-for-one from the municipality between the municpality and Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation,” she continues, “so we’ve had some breaks there, so we’re continueing to seek out land.”

She says even the organization can’t help every family that needs it.

“People still need to have a certain income level, even just to be able to afford a habitat mortgage, but there’s definitely that level of people that are working every day, they’re out in the community, they’re hard working people but they could never get a conventional mortgage here, so we help those people))

Lewis-Winton says there’s still a lot of work to do, and the organization could always use help.

“Even though this is a modular home, we’re bringing it in unfinished.  So we’ll still have painting to do, we have flooring to do, we’ve still got a basement that we’ve got to excavate,” she stresses, “we’ll need some people out there.”

She says a family hasn’t been picked yet, but applications can be found online or through the Wood Buffalo Housing and Development office.
