Wood Buffalo region under an air quality advisory

Alberta Health Services issued an air quality advisory for the Wood Buffalo region today. It says that is due to the smoky conditions caused by wildfires in the Northwest Territories and High Level-areas.

It’s so bad outside that the Lung Association is telling people to stay indoors.

AHS says that there could be a number of health concerns due to the smoke. People with respiratory like COPD and asthma as well as those with cardiovascular conditions will see their symptoms get worse. Kids and the elderly are at risk of smoke-related illness.

It says that you should stay indoors as much as possible and close all windows and close any vents that would allow smoky air in. Keep away from using anything that will create more smoke like a wood burning stove, candles or a fireplace.

Anyone experiencing symptoms can call Alberta Health Link at 811 to speak to a registered nurse.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
