YMM signing with project manager

The Fort McMurray International Airport found the right bidder for its expansion project. SNC-Lavalin will manage the project which includes expanding the main terminal and extending the main runway.

“YMM acts as the strategic air transportation hub for Northern Alberta and as the primary access point to Canada’s critically-important oil sands,” states President and CEO Scott Clements. “We look forward to working with the excellent team that SNC-Lavalin has put together.”

A previous traffic analysis said the airport would also need five bridged gates for domestic and international flights by 2017. This will let travellers step on the plane directly from the terminal.

The airport authority says the bigger terminal means there will be more opportunities to shop and dine, while the expanded runway makes room for aircrafts heading to sun destinations.

The expansion costs $75 million. Funding is split between the airport, the RMWB and the federal government.

The airport says construction is slated to start some time in 2016.
