Layton stepping aside to focus on health after new cancer diagnosis

Federal NDP leader Jack Layton will be taking a leave of absence from his post.

Layton has been battling prostate cancer for a while, and he says that treatment is going well. However, yesterday at a news conference, he revealed that he has been diagnosed with another type of non-prostate cancer.

He says that at the advice of his doctor, he will step aside from his work to fight the secondary cancer.

An interim leader for the federal NDP has been recommended. He says that he intends to return to the leadership role by the time Parliament resumes on September 19th.
