CNRL shows off CO2 injection process to handle tailings

CNRL is using carbon dioxide to try and go greener.

One of the challenges for the oil sands industry is drying out the combination of clay and water that is left over from oil sands mining.

CNRL says they inject a gel containing CO2 helps. That creates a dried-out clay that can be put back in the ground and eventually covered with soil.

The technology was showcased as part of the Oil Sands Tailings Consortium’s media tour this week.

Currently, CNRL is importing the carbon dioxide, but hopes to be using its own in the process by 2015.
