Cape Breton community reacts to death of oilsands contractor

The Cape Breton community of New Waterford is reeling after residents heard of the death of a man at Suncor’s Firebag site.

56-year-old George MacQuarrie died after being struck in the chest with a piece of equipment Sunday afternoon. He died of his injuries Monday morning. MacQuarrie was working for Flint Transfield Services, and was a pipefitter by trade.

Many residents knew MacQuarrie, who had been working in Western Canada for several years.

Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the incident.
