Bag bylaw gets thumbs-down in Chamber survey

The results are in from the Chamber of Commerce’s Plastic Bag survey.

The ban on single-use shopping bags didn’t fare too well with the 525 respondents.

Seventy-four percent of people called it an inconvenience, seventy seven percent said it’s cost them money, and eighty-four percent say they bring home plastic bags when they shop out of town.

“Almost four out of five households said that the bag ban had absolutely no impact on the amount of household waste generated by them,” said Jon Tupper, chamber President.

Tupper says the survey also brought up some potentially more effective alternatives.

“A lot of people were in favour of curbside recycling – I think that would just remove that one extra barrier to recycling,” he said.

“I’m confident that you’d see an increase in participation.

The results will be submitted to council before their review of the bylaw.
