RCMP signs 20-year extension as provincial police

After almost four years of negotiations, the Alberta government has signed on to twenty more years with the RCMP.

The mounties will stay on as the provincial police force until 2032 – that will be the 100th anniversary of RCMP policing in Alberta.

The cost-sharing agreement will stay the same, with the federal government paying thirty percent, and Alberta chipping in the remaining seventy.

Provincial public security minister Frank Oberle says while the costs are the same, the infrastructure agreement will be different.

“We were leasing or renting before, and Ottawa owned the infrastructure,” he said. “Now we will own 70% of the infrastructure.”

Municipalities will still contract directly with the RCMP to arrange local policing.
