Curbside recycling to expand starting October 28th

(Fort McMurray, AB – Sept. 26, 2011) – Curbside recycling implementation begins Friday, Oct. 28, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo announced today.

The first phase of service includes neighbourhoods receiving curbside waste collection on Fridays, as well as the residences in Abasand and Saprae Creek that participated in the curbside recycling pilot project.

Curbside recycling bins and information packages will be delivered to homes in the identified areas during Waste Reduction Week, Oct. 17 to 23.

“Results from the curbside recycling pilot project showed residents are very supportive of the enhanced service,” said Mayor Melissa Blake. “The Municipality used observations from the pilot test participants to fine-tune the service before implementation begins.”

Neighbourhoods receiving curbside waste collection from Monday through Thursday will be phased in through summer 2012. The phased implementation allows for more testing and troubleshooting in winter to identify long-term service delivery solutions.

The pilot project showed more than 90 per cent of respondents were satisfied with the service. The alternating weekly schedule for recycling-bin pickup proved easy to learn, and almost all participants felt confident about correctly sorting materials. Householders found the bins easy to move, although they expressed a strong preference for the larger-sized waste bins.

Beginning with this first phase of implementation, the Municipality is also accepting all clean, dry plastics for recycling. This includes everything from clean Styrofoam, to yogurt and margarine tubs, to all-plastic toys and kitchen implements.
