Preventing gridlock during peak traffic times

Wood Buffalo RCMP released the following:

In the Fort McMurray area we are currently experiencing a high volume of road construction in and around town, making traffic delays frequent. Wood Buffalo RCMP are reminding drivers to keep safety and traffic flow in mind when traveling on our roadways. Should a vehicle breakdown, motorists must make every effort to move that vehicle out of the flow of traffic onto the shoulder, median, or to another safe rest area, so as not to impede the flow of traffic. Failure to do so without relevant justification may result in Provincial Violation Tickets being issued for impeding traffic flow.

Another concern in regard to traffic flow stems from minor collision. Motorists involved in non-injury collisions, where the vehicles are moveable, are advised that they MUST move those vehicles out of the flow of traffic themselves as soon as safely possible. Police will not attend collisions of this nature. Involved parties are responsible for exchanging particulars, and reporting the collision on their own. Police generally attend motor vehicle collisions where involved parties are injured, traffic control is required due to immovable obstacles, or major property damage has occurred as a result of the collision.

Driving is a privilege that we often take for granted. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the roadways remain safe. The public is reminded that we must work together to prevent traffic delays and further incidents from occurring.
