Redford sworn in as premier

Alberta has a new premier.

Alison Redford was sworn in as the province’s 14th premier this morning.

“As your premier, I pledge today that I will keep listening to Albertans,” said Redford after today’s ceremony.

“I will endeavour to govern with the integrity, transparency, and accountability that Albertans want and deserve.”

She says there hasn’t been a sea change in Alberta politics — but that voters wanted change and her party caught up to that desire.

In her first speech as premier, she credited her parents for her journey to the province’s top job.

“They supported me, sometimes they pushed me, sometimes they argued with me. They showed me the world, and best of all, they brought me here to Alberta, which is the best place to live,” she said.

“Of course, the only shadow on today is my mum, who’s not here to see it,” said Redford, visibly holding back tears.

“Without her … I wouldn’t be here today.”

Redford is the first female premier of Alberta.
