Junior Curling Champs. coming to Fort McMurray

Fort McMurray will host the 2013 Canadian Junior Curling Championships, it was announced today.

The 10-day event will run January 31-February 10 at Macdonald Island.

Twenty-six of the best teams in the country will compete for a chance to represent Canada in Russia.

The CNRL Arenas at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre will be refitted for curling to allow for spectator seating and televising of the finals on TSN.

“It’s going to bring a lot of people to our region that are going to go away as ambassadors,”  said bid committee chair and regional councillor Don Scott.

Hopes were also expressed that the event’s legacy fund could help further develop curling in the region, and eventually allow local curlers to compete at the junior nationals.

Scott said a representative of the now-host committee will attend this year’s event in Napanee, Ontario.
