Province sends letter to EU on "dirty" oil sands label

The provincial government is joining the fight to stop the European Union from labelling oil sands crude as dirty as part of its new Fuel Quality Directive.

It’s sent a letter to EU experts saying Alberta has grave concerns that the plan could threaten trade between Canada and Europe.

It says the plan discriminates against the oil sands and would be incompatible with the EU’s trade obligations.

The federal government has threatened to take the EU to the World Trade Organization if the plan goes through.

Last week, federal energy minister Joe Oliver called the plan “perverse.”
