Confed bus lane violators to get $172 tickets tomorrow

After a rough start to the bus lane on Confederation Way, the municipality is cracking down on violators.

“People will be experiencing enforcement as they come down the hill in the morning,” says Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer Rick Kirschner.

“And we’re ready to rock,” he added.

He says people who drive in the inside, bus-only lane between 5 and 8 a.m. will get a $172 ticket for “failure to obey a traffic control device.”

The bus lane debuted this morning and resulted in multiple violators as well as worse-than-usual traffic congestion on Confederation Way.

“It’s just a free for all; this is a joke,” said one caller to the Country 93.3 morning show with Jerry Neville. “I’m stuck in traffic in the middle, and everyone’s just whipping by me [in the bus lane] and cutting me off.”

“I agree that the bus lane is an awesome thing to do,” said another caller. “But it’s taking me longer to get down that hill now, being in the centre lane.”

The muncipality is inviting questions on the new lane at their construction hotline: 780-793-1054.
