Cabinet debating whether to focus on upgrading bitumen

The provincial cabinet is debating whether to focus on upgrading bitumen here in Alberta, after the Keystone XL pipeline was delayed.

The Calgary Herald is quoting energy minister Ted Morton as saying he’s being cautious about any more government investment in upgrading, after the province put billions in loans towards the North West upgrader in Redwater.

The province expects the North West refinery will earn it an extra $200 – 700 million over 30 years by selling diesel instead of raw bitumen.
