UPDATE: Hear Sam House’s first interview since being traded to Fort McMurray here:
The Fort McMurray Oil Barons have traded for a new defenceman.
18-year old Sam House was acquired today from the Calgary Canucks.
“Our defence has been okay this year, but we’re a little worried about depth,” said Gord Thibodeau, head coach and general manager. “We think [House] has a bit more potential than what he’s shown so far, and we felt there was a chance to upgrade what we have.”
In a convoluted transaction, Thibodeau acquired a forward from the Calgary Mustangs and then immediately traded him to the Canucks in exchange for House.
The six-foot-two, one hundred eighty pound d-man scored a goal and an assist against Fort McMurray when the Canucks lost to the MOB 7-4 earlier this year.
Thibodeau says the moves won’t stop there.
“We’re not going to carry 25 [players] into Friday morning, so there definitely has to be some further moves made,” he admitted.
“But this didn’t precipitate a move,” he emphasized.
“There were going to be moves made anyway.”
The Barons are in Calgary on Friday night to play House’s former team.
