Scott announces run for provincial PCs

Municipal councillor Don Scott is hoping to make the leap into provincial politics.

He’ll be running for the PC nomination in the new Fort McMurray–Conklin riding, which includes the lower townsite and southern part of Thickwood.

Scott announced his candidacy in front of a few dozen supporters and family at the Sawridge this afternoon.

He says Fort McMurray would be better served with a government MLA.

“I think it’s been challenging in this region – there’s such growth here that we need to make sure that this region is getting what it deserves, and the closer we are to government, I think the better the decisions are going to be for our region.”

He says he doesn’t think the PC brand will bring him down in this region.

“I think that with Alison Redford we have a new premier, we have a new direction, we have new leadership. The Progressive Conservative Party is the party that’s going to make a difference in this region.”

Scott says he’ll take a leave of absence from his spot as councillor when the writ is dropped for the next election.

He was first elected last October.

He is the first declared candidate in either of the two new ridings in the region.
