Chiquita boycotts oil sands

A major American food company is promising to avoid using fuel from Alberta’s oilsands.

Chiquita Brands sells hundreds of millions of dollars of fruit, juice and snack foods around the world.

It says it has joined 14 other companies in trying to reduce its carbon footprint.

Chiquita has told the U.S.-based group ForestEthics that it will avoid using fuel, wherever it can, from refineries supplied by oilsands exports.

The decision was taken after a year-long campaign by ForestEthics to get Chiquita to come on board.

Other companies that have made similar moves include cosmetics giant Avon and U.S. drugstore chain Walgreen’s.
