More fire safety tips for the holidays

The Fort McMurray fire department has more tips to keep you and your family safe this winter.

Fire Prevention education officer Megan Steiestol says that if you’re using a space heater, you should make sure it’s away from anything that can catch fire, and that you turn it off when you go to sleep.

The fire department also recommends that you make sure your chimney is cleaned before you have a fire in you fireplace, because creosote can build up and catch fire.

She also says to make sure that you keep burning candles out of the reach of children and away from where your pets can knock them over.

Additionally, she says it’s a bad idea to dispose of your gift wrap in your fireplace, because it can cause ash to blow around your home and cause a fire.
