Barons trade Penner, acquire defenceman

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons pulled off three deals on deadline day today, triple the number of transactions they made at last year’s final cut down date.

The most prominent move saw fan favourite and team penalty minute leader Cole Penner traded to the Okotoks Oilers. The move brought the MOB down to 10 1991-born players, one more than the team can dress on any given night. However, forward Dylan Seymour remains injured due to a concussion; the team is hoping he’ll be able to return in due course.

The Barons acquired a new defenceman in 1991-born rearguard Mike Puddifant, who came from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the British Columbia Hockey League. The Salmon Arm, B.C. native has now played on six different Junior A teams and brings veteran experience to the Barons’ blueline. The 5’11”, 185 lb defenceman had 9 goals and 31 assists in 158 career BCHL games with 261 penalty minutes.

Finally, the MOB cut down its roster number by shipping rookie forward Wyat Haustein to the Canmore Eagles; the 1993-born winger had requested a move to increase his playing time.

All three trades were made in exchange for future considerations.
