StatsCan shows 27.3% growth in Wood Buffalo

Wood Buffalo well outpaced the country in population growth, according to the first batch of numbers from the 2011 national census.

Statistics Canada says the municipality grew by more than 27 percent over the last five years; from just under 52 thousand people, to more than 65 and a half thousand people.

That’s a big difference from last year’s municipal census which said there were more than 66 thousand permanent residents.

But the growth rate still well outpaces the national rate, which was just under 6 percent, and the Alberta growth rate, which was almost 11 percent
