There’s a disagreement of population numbers for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
The 2011 federal census says the population of Fort McMurray is just over 61,000 people, with more than 65 thousand residents in the entire region. The 2010 municipal census put Fort McMurray’s population at 77,000, a difference of about 20 percent.
Mayor Melissa Blake told the Edmonton Journal that the municipality has to extrapolate its total population. Statistics Canada does not extrapolate.
