Redford to call health inquiry

Premier Alison Redford says issues of doctor intimidation, queue jumping, and political interference in health care will be part of an upcoming public inquiry.

Redford says those topics have to be explored because they were key concerns raised this week in a report by the Alberta Health Quality Council.

The council found the system is burdened by long waits for emergency help, mismanagement, and doctors being ignored or abused for speaking out on sub-standard care.

The government has already passed legislation to have the council set up an independent inquiry into the system once Redford’s team delivers the terms of reference to it.

Redford says those terms will be sent soon to let the inquiry get going before she drops the writ for an election.

Redford defends her government’s handling of health care but admits decisions by previous administrations “had challenges.”
