Fort Chipewyan RCMP are currently investigating a sudden death that occurred sometime between the evening of February 25 and the morning of February 27, 2012.
Police were called to investigate a person that had been reported missing by concerned family members before 8:00 am on Monday morning. A search and further investigation located the missing person near Lake Athabasca in the Goose Island area. The missing person, a 32 year-old male, from the Fort Chipewyan area, was pronounced dead on the scene. The autopsy will likely shed some light onto the exact cause of death.
Although the investigation continues, preliminary reports would indicate that this incident is not suspicious but rather very unfortunate due to very frigid weather conditions that are believed to have played a factor. Out of respect for the family the RCMP will not be releasing the name of the victim.
